Post details: Don't believe the hype

Opponents of the proposed city charter amendment wielded a weak argument at Monday's Lincoln City Council meeting.

They said the proposal, which would prevent elected officials and council members from having contracts with the city, would prevent business owners from running for city office.

That would be true only if a business depended on city contracts. Most businesses don't. There would continue to be plenty of business candidates if the amendment were enacted.

Conversely, the proposal would boost the city's ability to demand good, or at least adequate, performance on contracts. Right now city employees find themselves in the uncomfortable position of enforcing contracts on people who control the city's budget.

To this political independent, the proposed amendment seems in the taxpayer's best interests.

Bugs & Fixes: Get DropStuff working again

After upgrading to Smith Micro Software's StuffIt 12 (either the Standard or Deluxe versions), DropStuff may no longer work properly. Instead of compressing your file when you try to use it, StuffIt Setup Assistant launches in error.

The fix is a common one: Delete the relevant preferences file. In this case, go to your user folder /Library/Preferences folder and delete the com.stuffit.DropStuff.plist file.

Announcing the arrival of the first A380 in S'pore

IN A welcome fit for the 'new queen in the sky', the world's first Airbus 380 superjumbo landed at Changi Airport at about 6.40pm on Wednesday to a water cannon salute.

It is a privilege reserved for the very special and the double-decker jet christened 9V-SKA on the Singapore aircraft register is believed to the first to receive such an honour at Changi.

Dressed in SIA's livery, the giant bird - as long as a soccer pitch and with a tail seven storeys high - flew in in from the the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse.

It was towed into position and docked at the soon-to-be-opened Terminal 3, where Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and about several hundred guests had gathered since 6pm in eager anticipation.

The giant bird's flight to Singapore was piloted by a four-member SIA crew led by chief A-380 pilot Captain Robert Ting.

We'll pay the piper if we like the tune

Industry figures show that although album sales were down last year, digital sales worldwide were up 40% - hardly evidence of unstoppable piracy.

In South Korea, which has been plagued by piracy, digital sales have soared and now account for more than 60% of the market. In Japan, full-track downloads to mobile phones account for 40% of all sales value. Why? Because there is an easy payment system - one that doesn't involve operators getting up to £25 a track in data charges, as can happen here.

The industry should accept there are plenty of other reasons why conventional sales are falling, of which piracy, unacceptable though it is, is only a part. Youngsters have other claims on their time, from computer games to watching DVDs. Part of the fall may be due to a lull in top-class albums.

Ellen Page's Sexuality! Jennifer Garner's Hairdo!

Tilda promises her award to her agent, but I bet he'll only take 10 percent of it. No Country for Old Men wins Best Adapted Screenplay despite the lengthy stretches with no dialogue whatsoever. What I have to say about that is . . . (silence; the wind blows a tumbleweed into the dead man's face; a coyote yelps in the distance).

9:54 p.m.: The legendary inflatable doll known as Miley Cyrus announces another lousy nominated song. Who could forget Miley's immortal Grammy moment when she professed love for dad, her brother, and Jesus Christ? The son of our Lord will be so thrilled to know he's on a par with the guy who did "Achy Breaky Heart"!

10:15 p.m.: Best Actress already? Did someone shuffle the cue cards? Cate Blanchett must be the first person to be nominated for a movie that got a 34 percent rating on rottentomatoes.com.
