| Carlin is more hippy than dippy
He worked in radio for a time, teamed for a couple years with fellow comic and longtime friend Jack Burns and eventually began to appear on every TV talk show of the day. But somehow it never felt quite right. "I was always out of step," he says now. "I left school in ninth grade, I got kicked out of the Air Force, I got kicked out of the choir and the altar boys and summer camp and three schools and I was a pot smoker when I was 13 in the early '50s. I was always a lawbreaker and a kind of outlaw rebel." Still, the dean of counterculture comedians might have soldiered on in the suit and tie had it not been for one thing: the 1960s. "I went through some changes, as the whole country did, in the '60s and I took on a much more personal point of view and started doing a lot of autobiographical things about my childhood, my neighborhood, being Irish-Catholic, being a kid from Harlem.
V. Guarisco: In Honor Of Anthony And Mary Guarisco
Having said that, I will start this off with a few things both of them would appreciate -- just a few little thoughtful things that meant so much to them and us in the family. Does anyone remember the following quote? 'I'll get you my pretty! And...your little dog too!'The Wicked Witch of the East Threatening 'Dorothy' in 'The Wizard of Oz.' Yes, of course we do...I think just about everyone on the planet has seen this film classic. Well, just like everything these days -- movies, plays, music, etc. -- everything has a different meaning to each of us, as individuals. Once in a while, a Hollywood film is not only entertaining, but it captures our domestic moral quest in surreal human form. For me, 'The Wizard of Oz' is just that, a phenomenal measure of good over evil, a valuable imperative for us to acquire the needed essentials to build character for overcoming life's many challenges.
American trims flights as pilots plan retirements
American Airlines is canceling dozens of flights in its February schedule as it faces potential retirements of more than 100 pilots, company and pilots union representatives said Wednesday. American executives said the flight cancellations are unavoidable, necessitated by an early retirement option for senior pilots and a downturn in the stock market. "We have decided to proactively cancel a number of flights so as to provide minimal disruptions to our customers' travel plans," American spokeswoman Tami McLallen said in a telephone interview. "It's a very very small number of flights. And it's not about cost cutting; it's about retirements." American's pilots, members of the 12,000-member Allied Pilots Association, said the flight cancellations are the result of over-aggressive cost cutting by management.
ABC denies 'Jihad Sheilas' were duped
FOR as long as ABC journalists Mary Ann Jolley and Renata Gombac have been working on Jihad Sheilas, tension has been mounting within the corridors of the national broadcaster. Another ABC journalist, investigative reporter Sally Neighbour, had been working on securing the story of Australian women and radical Islam for the program she was working for, Four Corners. But it was Jolley and Gombac who persuaded Raisah bint Alan Douglas and Rabiah Hutchinson to be interviewed on camera. Jolley works for Foreign Correspondent and Gombac for the ABC's stand-alone investigative unit, which produces stories for programs across the news and current affairs division. They spent about six months working on this project, with a senior producer, Deb Masters, brought in at a later stage as executive producer.
Underwood defense attempts to save his life
The jury convicted him Friday for the 2006 murder of Jamie Rose Bolin. The jury now must decide whether to give Underwood life in prison with parole, without parole or death. Wayne Woodyard, one of Underwoods court-appointed attorneys, said the defense would focus on Underwoods shyness, depression and the frustration he encountered as a boy. No one will come forward to tell you he is insane, Woodyard said. Assistant District Attorney Susan Caswell said the states opening statements that Underwood deserved the death penalty because it is the only appropriate and just punishment for the murder of Jamie Bolin. She added all the evidence from the first half of the trial, including Underwoods graphic videotaped confession after his arrest, could be used in the jurys decision.
