Pelosi ultimatum shows US Democrat's 'backbone'

House of Representatives Democrats really did not expect the Justice Department to present their contempt citations against two of US President George W. Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury for prosecution.

But the effort and having a civil lawsuit at the ready as a backup in their fight against the White House over the 2006 firings of nine federal prosecutors has satisfied, for now, some liberals who for a year have wanted much more: Bush's impeachment.

Even before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the first woman to reach Congress' highest office, the California Democrat had rejected demands from many in her party for impeachment.

Until two weeks ago, she had sat for seven months on the contempt citations sought by Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee against Bush's chief of staff, Josh Bolten, and his former counsel, Harriet Miers.

The Emerging Third World US

Quarter after quarter, year after year, the government reports job gains, but those gains are primarily in service industries: health care (we're not talking doctors, here), restaurants and bars, retail trade and, until recently, construction. A close examination of the figures will usually reveal a decline in manufacturing jobs. This is not an accident. .

Univision Battle With Televisa Places Programs in Jeopardy

A long-running feud between Univision Communications and the Mexican broadcaster that provides most of its programming is headed for a showdown in a federal court in Los Angeles. If Univision loses, it could see many of its prime-time shows yanked.

While a dispute over royalty payments is the source of the current dispute, tensions between the two companies date back to bad blood between Univisions former chief, A. Jerrold Perenchio, and the late Emilio Azcarraga Milmo, who felt he got a bad deal in 1992 when the two men negotiated the original contract. If the Mexican company, Grupo Televisa, wins and pulls its programming, Univisions enterprise value could be chopped by more than $1 billion.

The lawsuit centers on a program license agreement, or PLA, between Televisa, the dominant broadcaster in Mexico, and L.A.s Univision, the dominant Spanish-language TV network in the U.S.

Adobe gives web, desktop development a breath of fresh AIR

There's something in the air, and this time, it's not from Apple. Adobe announced today the official 1.0 release of Adobe AIR, its technology for merging web and desktop application development, along with Flex 3, its open-source application development framework. With AIR and Flex, the company says that it is staying on top of the development of rich Internet applications (RIA) while enabling developers to create apps for both the Web and the desktop without having to create entirely new code for each. And, of course, the company is using AIR to help port its own applications over to the Web—such as Premiere and Photoshop—while maintaining a desktop userbase. Once the a migration is finished, it will be easier for Adobe to maintain its software both online and off while using the same codebase.

Misadventures in Atlanta

She's very intelligent, works during the day and goes to school pursuing a degree in accounting. I have the utmost respect and admiration for her and what she's now doing for herself and her children.

I guess all I'm saying is that while I understand how a woman such as you described might cause you to raise an eyebrow or two, I wouldn't completely write her off without considering the person as a whole.

Two murders and two life sentences won't alter one convict's ...

Robert Rodriguez just keeps cranking 'em out. This hasn't always been a good thing--Spy Kids 2 and 3 felt rushed in a way that the first one didn't, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico looked cheap compared with its cinematic predecessor, Desperado. But the more Rodriguez keeps at it, the better handle he seems to have on the digital tools available to him. Sin City was a striking triumph of visuals, and his latest movie for kids, The Adventures of Sharkboy & Lavagirl in 3D, plays like a more polished, better-looking second draft of Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. .

HTC TyTN II (P4550 Kaiser) Review

The HTC TyTN was considered to be at launch the best Pocket PC on the market. Crammed with lots of features, it made you think there could not be anything more to desire from a PDA. HSDPA connectivity, big screen, sliding keyboard, two cameras, fast processor made the TyTN a hit. And now HTC has come with an improved version which includes all of the features of its predecessor and even more. The most noticeable additions are GPS, which should get rid of the need for an external GPS unit, an OS upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 of course, a 3 megapixel camera and other improvements you are about to find out. The device was initially announced under the codename Kaiser and now it is known as the HTC TyTN II (P4550). Mobile operators have already started to sell rebranded versions under different names, such as MDA Vario III from T-Mobile and AT&T Tilt 8925.
